Some people think that schools should stop teaching students by using books, because students find them boring and that children can learn from films, TV, video games and computers instead. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It is believed by some people that students are bored by reading books, therefore teachers should find other tools for teaching, such as movies and video games. From my point of view, this statement is absurd because books are never boring to children if properly used by teachers and movies or video games cannot take the place of reading.

To begin with, it is the way subjects are taught not books themselves that bores children. This is because most teachers only regurgitate ideas from books without engaging students in reading books themselves. As a result, after several weeks of learning, students are fed up with the content of the class, and lose interest in the subject they study. At this point, they are demotivated to read the books on this subject. It is no wonder that books do not appeal to most students.

However, books are the irreplaceable resources for children’s learning. Although movies and video games play a vital role in some aspects, such as illustrating natural phenomena or simulating a lab experiment, they fail to explain the logic behind them. For example, a video clip can show students the whole process of free falling, but only through books where all the calculations and deductions are available can students understand the relationship between the gravity of the object and velocity of its falling. Therefore, video games and movies are not replacement for books.

In conclusion, books are not in fact boring to children, and children should still be encouraged to learn from books.
